History & Mandate
Takoradi Technical University (TTU) was established in April 1954 as a Government Technical Institute. It operated for thirty-nine years under the Ghana Education Service of the Ministry of Education, offering programmes at Craft and Technician Certificate levels in commercial and technical subjects - awarding certificates from the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and the City and Guilds of London, United Kingdom.
As part of Ghana's Educational Reforms in the 1980s, the Takoradi Technical Institute and five other similar institutions were upgraded by the Polytechnic Act 321 (PNDC Law 1993) to become part of the Ghana Tertiary Education System. The institution began offering Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in the 1993/1994 academic year.
In September 2016, following the government's policy to convert six polytechnics into Technical Universities under the Technical Universities Act 2016 (Act 922), Takoradi Polytechnic attained the status of a Technical University. The Takoradi Polytechnic Council formally adopted the name Takoradi Technical University, duly registered with the Registrar General's Department of Ghana.
